Kotei Megagame 2010: How Best to Help the Crane

After going to my closest Kotei in Tacoma, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can help the Crane the most in the Megagame.  I was absent minded and knew very little about the Megagame, so I didn’t renew my long since expired IA membership before this started, but my hat’s off to AEG for coming up with something really fun and interactive that allows players of all levels of competitive nature to be a part of what happens in the Plague War.

That said, I’m stuck with Koteis and what I can hope to accomplish as my ways of contributing.  I’m only making it to one more Kotei this year, the Abbotsford BC event, and I’m going to try my best.  It’s been a long, long time since the year I made it to single elims at two Koteis, so I don’t foresee myself making it to top 4.  Here are some ways, though, that I think I and other average players can do our best to get Crane some points and some story time.

1.  Play your clan.

Unless you think you’ll just wreck house with some other clan you’ve been super practicing with, play Crane.  It sounds like clan participation totals are having some bearing on what the story team does, though I don’t know specifics.

2.  Participate in the Honor events.

A lot of players don’t participate in side events, which narrows your competition.  Especially, it seems like fewer players do when it’s a costume contest.  Put something together!  I’m sure a lot of us are on a budget, me included, but some creativity will go a long way and effort is noticed!  We are the Crane.  Surely we have fabulous artisans who can make beautiful costumes and accessories, charming courtiers who can don a kimono and properly tie an obi, and strapping samurai who can fill out a hakama with pride!

3.  Tell people you’re competing in the Honor event.

I didn’t tell anyone at the Tacoma Kotei that I was trying to go for Best Clan Attire even though I was wearing a Crane kimono.  I thought it was obvious.  I got a lot of compliments on my outfit… after the votes had been cast and someone else had won.  It’s not pretentious or ostentatious to mention to your opponents, win or lose, that you are trying to compete in the Honor event for your clan and you would appreciate their contribution.  The Crane have always been great at lobbying for the Favor!

So that’s my two cents.  I know my post count will be something like TWO with this post, but I am a longtime Crane player, 12 years now, who just recently re-registered for this forum after the domain change.  I love the clan and there’s not a single clan in the Empire more suitable for me.  I’m a politics and law dork who dabbles in art, though doesn’t display much of it.   I love my clan, and hope these suggestions will make a few more people think about their own plans for the Kotei season.

Tacoma Kotei 2008

This was Nathan’s (Hotaru) and my first Kotei of the year and one of only 2 we’ll get to attend before Gencon, but DUN DUN DUN we have pretty much decided we ARE going to Gencon this year!

I played Shiz Toshi Honour, Exploding Crane as Case called it, and went 5-3! I’m so happy as I got next to NO practice before the tournament! I didn’t tell my opponents that though…

I was Top Female player and got some neat courtier figurines! I don’t know what the prize would’ve been for a girl playing a military deck…

Winning Moves:  Taking off my obi in the middle of a game v. Scorpion Dishonour, while my opponent was playing Unfortunate Incident… and later on… changing clothes in Nathan’s car rather than keep wearing my uncomfortable costume all day.  In shortform, I took off my kimono and started winning games.  Lesson Learned: I play better when I don’t wear a costume.  Too much fuss, not enough card concentration.

Matchups and Results:

Scorpion Dishonor – Loss, fracking dishonor. hate hate hate hate hate hatehatehate
Spider Military – Win, yay for Reinforce the Gates. Sad for Chris Braun.
Lion Venerable Plains Honor – Lost, stupid virtue cards. what is that about?
Phoenix Military – Lost, THREE TURNS OF GOLDFRACK. WTH.
Lion Military – Won, Allan and I honestly spent most of the game talking politics. It went to time and I was up in honour, but it was close and he gave me the win.
Crane Honor/Military? – Won, and I took 2 provinces with Jun’ai/Koutetsu Meiyo. I tac’d a Hamstrung! One attack I didn’t tac at all. I just sent Hakuseki in during the inf phase! RARRRRRR! /flex
Scorpion Military – Won, which was redeeming after losing to Scorpion 1st rd.
Crab – Won, very close final game. I crossed 40 with Dist Gov/Ekei/Kitsune Den on my turn and some battle based honor gain on his attack. I held off my last province with 4 defenders, 2 Flash of Steel, and 3 Outer Walls. Yeah, I said 3.

Really fun tournament, not just because I did better than I hoped.

I’m super tired, and I no longer have a voice as the devil cold has eaten me.

New Blog and Website

I found out this morning at about 4 AM that people still know who “Yoshiko” is, even though I fell off the map for a few years.  I love that about the L5R community, and it really made me want to start up a website again.

I’m still working on design and hosting for the rest of the website, but this blog will serve as the “News” section and homepage of the upcoming full website!  It will be a collection of material from my old site with some new items as I find them.

There are a few special things I want to do with my site:

  • Post decklists in one section, in a concise format to make them easy to find.
  • Write articles on everything from CCG strategy to buzz in the community.
  • Point people to interesting, Craney things I find on the internet and off.
  • Hopefully unite the community, and connect with Crane players I meet at tournaments.

I have a few article ideas I’m tossing around.

  • “Blingin’ on a Budget:  Rep Your Clan on the Cheap”
  • “Manly Duds for Clan Style”

I really will write about something that’s NOT gamer fashion, but I think those two articles would be unique and enjoyable.

The website, as with my old site, will feature decklists, articles, and various Crane multimedia I’ve made in the past and will make in the future!  If you have any ideas for wallpapers or whatnot, input is welcomed!

Thanks for stopping by.  🙂
